It all started IN 2014…

when a hundred Boston-based artists, creatives, and technologists gathered to conceive of a digital art festival that would serve as a “by us, for us” contemporary demonstration of the city’s creative talent. Since its first year, ILLUMINUS festivals have attracted over 200 thousand visitors, supported the work of over 350 artists, and produced over 250 site specific installations.

While we are proud of all we have accomplished, experiencing the public health, social justice, and economic crises of the last few years has led us to reimagine ILLUMINUS’s mission and potential. In our new model, we intend to produce activations in each neighborhood of Boston in collaboration with local emerging artists and their communities.

OUR MISSION

ILLUMINUS uses the creative process of developing and producing light-based public art experiences to enable artists to connect, inspire, and empower their communities. We are creating a connected city where artists are leaders and every individual feels part of a loving and vibrant community capable of manifesting positive change.

OUR VALUES

  • We serve to enable and amplify the voices and visions of local artists and their communities.

  • We provide accessible, inclusive, and welcoming experiences for people of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities.

  • We are responsible stewards of environmental resources, using renewable power whenever possible and leaving minimal impact.

  • We are generous with knowledge, resources, opportunities, and networks to empower emerging creatives.

  • We operate in a spirit of partnership and open exchange.

  • Experimentation, failure, risk-taking are celebrated in our process.

  • Artists always get paid.
